Świerad-Andrzej. Urodził się on w okolicach Zakliczyna nad Dunajcem. Tam przyjął imię zakonne Andrzej i powrócił do życia pustelniczego. Zmarł ok. 1031 r. w grocie koło Trenczyna, nad rzeką Wag. Pochowano go w katedrze św. Niewielka, jednonawowa świątynia z węższym, zamkniętym prostą ścianą prezbiterium została zdewastowana w XVI w. przez arian i powtórnie konsekrowana w 1611 r. Benedyktem w 1083 r., dzięki staraniom króla węgierskiego Władysława I Świętego. --- Church of St Świerad and St Benedict in Tropie Tropie, a village situated on the eastern bank of Dunajec River, is closely related to the roots of Christianity in Poland. The hermitage of St Świerad-Andrzej, who lived there for a few dozen years, was situated in this place. St Świerad was born in the neighbourhood of Zakliczyn on the Dunajec River. At the end of the 10th century, he moved to the hermitage situated in the vicinity of Czchów. Twenty years later he travelled together with his disciple, Benedict, to the Benedictine monastery on Zobor Mountain, close to Nitra. In the monastery he adopted the name of Andrzej and continued to live the life of a hermit. He died about 1031 in a cave near TrenČin, on Wag River. He was buried in St Emmeram’s cathedral in Nitra together with Benedict, who died a martyr’s death three years after his master. The construction of the church, erected upon a steep rock of a dozen metres or so, continued throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. The church was remodelled in the 14th and 16th centuries, while the porch and the chapel were added in 1634. The walls of the chancel made of the hewn sandstone are the only remains of the original sanctuary; at a later date they were extended upwards. The vestry adjoining the chancel’s northern wall was built in the 13th century. The small, single-nave church with a narrower chancel ending in a straight wall was damaged in the 16th century by the Arians, and re-consecrated in 1611. The church was lately renovated and covered with a new roof, as the old one perished during a storm. The interior of the sanctuary holds plenty of historical objects. The most precious ones include the remains of Romanesque polychromic painting in the northern rood arch, which depicts a saint wearing a crown and holding a sceptre; the saint is presumably St Stephen, king of Hungary. The vaults of the nave are covered with rococo paintings, showing the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The figures of the church’s patrons are exhibited in the main altar. The saints kneel below the scene of the coronation of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Trinity. Another interesting object is the built-in Baroque baptismal font, made of stone and covered with a wooden case featuring baptism-related paintings. In the vicinity of the church there are traces of St Świerad’s presence in the region. The cave where he used to live and the nearby 13th-century stone chapel are well preserved. A trunk remains of the old oak tree – according to legend, the saint’s retreat – and the spring, believed to have miraculous properties, still survives. Świerad Andrzej is the first Polish saint, as he was canonised together with his disciple Benedict in 1083, following the endeavours of Hungarian king Ladislaus (László) I the Holy.
