Description

English: Huge deposition of Travertine, originating from “cold” (ambient temperature) water of karst springs, as opposed to “hot springs”, which originate from the earth’s crust. This type of Travertine mounds are a phenomenon found in landscapes where karstified Muschelkalk or karstified Upper Jurassic prevail. The mound in the photo is on the valley’s slope of river Glatt, a tributary of upper river Neckar), ca. 1000 m west of the village “Glatt”. The slop’s karstwater emerges from an impounding layer in the Muschelkalk. Ca. 100 m of the slope is a soggy biotope (photo: Image:Karst-Quellflur_Naehe-Sulz-Neckar.jpg).
