Description
English: The Karamon Gate [1] (or Kara-mon (唐門)), also called Chokushimon (勅使門), stands on the raised ground beyond. The term karamon refers to a 'gate with a gently curved gable'.
The Engakuji Temple[2] (Engaku-ji,  円覚寺 えんがくじ.) is built on the slopes of a forested hill in Kita-Kamakura (Yamanouchi [3]), Kamakura City[4], Kanagawa Prefecture. Engakuji is one of the leading Zen temples in eastern Japan and the second of Kamakura's five great Zen temples. The temple was founded in 1282 under the auspices of the eighth regent (shikken) Hōjō Tokimune[5]. a year after the second invasion attempt by the Mongols [6] had been reverted. One purpose of the new temple was to rest the souls of those who fell in the battle between Japanese and Mongolian soldiers.[7]
