Summary edit

Description

A wrecked Kawasaki Ki-61 being inspected by 2/2nd Australian Infantry Battalion privates Baker and McCudden in Dagua Airfield, New Guinea, 1945. The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (which means “lying swallow” in Japanese) was a Japanese fighter introduced in 1942. Allied pilots initially believed Ki-61s were Messerschmitt Bf 109s, and therefore they started to call them "Tony"s. 3,078 Ki-61s were produced, some of them used by the Chinese after the war.
