English: The picture depicts a goat-like costume used during a typical Christmas celebration event mainly in the town of Hajdúdorog, Hungary. The unique event is actually a play that tells the story of the birth of Jesus usually from the shepherds' point of view. This tradition is called kecskézés in Hungarian that means something like "goat-play".
During the short scene the shepherds are talking about the angel who appeared for them and talked them about Jesus. The one dressed in the goat-costume plays the role of the ignorant goat. He can move the goat's "lower lip" with a stick and makes the goat ask funny questions about Jesus to the shepherds thus presenting the whole Christmas-story. The kecskézés used to be performed during the whole time of Christmas in the houses of the families of Hajdúdorog. The players asked all the blessings for the ones living in the house and wished merry Christmas for them. In return they got some food or sometimes money for the performance. Nowadays the tradition is revived and it is performed usually in the Cathedral or in the garden of the Cathedral. This costume can be seen in the local historical museum of Hajdúdorog. A kecskézést egykor egész karácsony idején játszották Hajdúdorogon, amelyet minden háznál előadtak. |
