English: The imposing wall monument to William Kendricke (d.1635) in Reading Minster (per Pevsner[1]). Arms of Kendrick: Ermine, a lion rampant sable. The inscription claims the family was descended from King Cynric of Wessex! William was the brother of Reading's great patron, John Kendrick, but his corrupt administration of his brother's great charitable legacy, the Oracle, eventual led to its appropriation by Christ's Hospital. Text from The History and Antiquities of Reading By Charles Coates[2]: Regarding another church in Reading: On the North wall of the chancel hangs the atchievement of fir William Kendrick, Ermine, a lion rampant Sable, on his shoulder a crescent for difference, with the arms of Ulster in a canton ; impaling Argent, three piles Sable, one issuing out of the chief, between two others reversed, for Howse, or Hulse, of Whitley. On the South wall of the chancel, fretty, Or and Sable, a cheveron Gules ; impaling Kendrick. The Kendrick Baronetcy, of Whitley in the County of Berkshire, was a title in the Baronetage of England. It was created on 29 March 1679 for William Kendrick, grand-nephew of the famous cloth merchant and philanthropist, John Kendrick. The title became extinct on the death of the second Baronet in 1699. |
