Summary edit

Description
English: The Kenmore Fire Hall, 16 Nash Road, Kenmore, New York, June 2022. Built in 1929, the Buffalo-based architectural firm of Hudson & Hudson here provide an interestingly heterodox take on the Colonial Revival. Plenty of classic stylistic tropes are present, such as a contrasting color scheme of dark brick offset by the light-gray cut stone of the quoins, window surrounds, and splayed lintels, as well as the Classical pediment and Doric pilaster strips that frame the front entrance. But atypical elements abound too, such as the hipped roof, the asymmetry of the façade, and the unusual keystone-studded baskethandle arches that crown the garage doors. Also notable is the modest scale of the structure, described by contemporary commentators as a "beautiful, modern and well-planned building" that nonetheless was not a "monument... to reckless expenditure of public money, to unsightliness and to poor management". Plans for what was originally to serve as a combined police and fire headquarters were approved by the Kenmore Village Board in October 1928, with construction commencing the following spring, and a gala dedication ceremony the following September that comprised an open house, lunch banquet, speeches by local dignitaries, and a grand parade in which appeared 200 firefighters from Kenmore and elsewhere in the area, members of the Village Board, eight fire trucks, and a marching band. The Kenmore Police subsequently moved out of the building and are now headquartered on Elmwood Avenue across from Mang Park.
