Bahasa Indonesia: Kepiting Tapal Kuda (Tachypleus gigas (Muller 1785)) atau Horseshoe crabs dikenal sebagai fosil hidup dari ordo Xiphosura yang dapat ditemukan di Pantai Timur Amerika Utara dan kawasan Indo-Pasifik (Sekiguchi, 1988; Rutecki et al., 2004). Kepiting Tapal Kuda termasuk jenis biota perairan yang dilindungi di Indonesia berdasarkan Keputusan Menteri Kehutanan No.12 / Kpts-II/1987 dan Peraturan Pemerintah No.7/1999. Kepiting Tapal Kuda dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat sekitar sebagai sumber makanan, pengobatan tradisional, dan ornamen (Rubiyanto, 2012; Meilana, 2015). Menurut penelitian Meilana (2020) terjadi penurunan poulasi Kepiting Tapal Kuda di Jawa, Sumatera, Kalimantan, dan Sulawesi akibat kebiasaan penduduk lokal memakan Kepiting Tapal Kuda dewasa yang menunjukkan bahwa adanya kebutuhan mendesak strategi manajemen yang baik dan efektif dalam konservasi Kepiting Tapal Kuda.
