Silver amulet in the shape of a hand (Khamsa or Khmissa), southern Morocco
Summary
editDescriptionKhmissa Berber amulet.png |
Khamsa Moroccan Berber amulet, silver. Amulet in the shape of a hand decorated with stars and crosses, two repeated floral motifs and flower rosettes (rosaces). This amulet is worn around the neck. Sometimes as part of a necklace, but sometimes also attached to other jewellery on a silver chain. Besides being a decorative object, a magic, protective function has been attributed to the khmissa (North African form of Arabic khamza, meaning 'five') amulets. The origin of this amulet is probably a Berber area in southern Morocco (Grammet 1998, p.309 and Flint 1973) |
