Description
English: Kimberlite from the Devonian of Russia.

This kimberlite sample is from an exploratory drill core in a diamondiferous pipe in northwestern Russia.

Sample description by a Russian diamond exploration geologist (I'm not 100% sure who it was):

Autholith kimberlite breccia, Pionerskaya Pipe, Zolotitskoye Field.

Structure is lithocrystalloclastic, ataxitic, banded. The rock contains: 5-7% of xenogenous material (quartz grains and argillite fragments), 10-15% of nuclear-bearing, nuclear-free and filmy autoliths. Enclosing kimberlite groundmass includes up to 80% olivine of the first and second generation replaced by serpentine with the admixtures of saponite and carbonate. Olivine-I is predominant. Kimberlite of fragments differs from enclosing kimberlite groundmass by higher content of ore dissemination. Diamond-satellite mineral specialization corresponds to all pipes of Zolotiskoe Field; predominant chrome-spinellid (hundreds of grams/ton of rock), in less degree pyrope and chrome-diopsides (ones to tens of grams/ton of rock).

Geologic unit: Pionerskaya Pipe, Zolotitskoye Field, Arkhangelskaya Diamond Province, Late Devonian

Locality: Pionerskaya Pipe, north-northeast of the town of Arkhangelsk, Arkhangelsk Region, east of the White Sea, northwestern Russia
