Summary
editDescriptionKings Sutton 1 geograph-2478601-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Bournemouth - York express approaching Kings Sutton. View southward, towards Oxford etc.; ex-GWR Paddington - Reading etc. - Oxford - Birmingham etc. main line, also direct main line from Paddington via Bicester that joined at Aynho Junction south of here. The 11.16 from Bournemouth West ran via Southampton, Basingstoke, Reading West Curve and Oxford to Banbury, with a WR locomotive replacing the SR one at Oxford and handing over to the ER at Banbury. From there the train ran via Woodford, Sheffield Victoria (reverse) and Pontefract to York (arr. 19.20). The locomotive is 4-6-0 No. 6906 'Chicheley Hall'. The line going to the right is the branch to Kingham: this lost its passenger service on 4/6/51, when it was cut back to Chipping Norton - Kingham until 3/12/62; before World War II the through 'Ports-to-Ports' express Newcastle-on-Tyne - Swansea took this route to Cheltenham then onward by main line. Ironstone traffic continued from Hook Norton, latterly from Adderbury until 8/69. |
