The crossing of the big snow-fed stream dashingdown the side valley of Baharak involved much troubleand risk for the baggage (Fig. 26), and the fifteen hundredfeet ascent to the Bashgaz spur which followed had tobe effected in many places over steep and slippery rockfaces. Without the energetic assistance of our Afghanprotectors the baggage which had to be unloaded againand again would never have been hauled up, in spite ofthe additional Wakhi carriers brought from Sarhad. By anarrow track which kept winding along steep slopes highabove the impassable river-gorge, and in a few places passedsmall alluvial plateaus, where patches of ground lookedas if terraced for cultivation in ancient times, we reachedcamp at Langar in the evening.
