Title
English: Klondikers with tents camped at the approach to Chilkoot Pass, Alaska, 1897.
Description
English: Caption on image: "45 [degrees] incline and summit of Chilkoot Pass. c1897" "Forty-five degrees incline and summit of Chilkoot Pass. This is the most difficult and dreaded portion of the journey, the trail rising here eleven feet in half a mile over a perfect maze of broken rock. In this photograph may be seen an almost continuous line of white specks reaching to the depression at the summit. Each is a human being with a pack upon his back toiling slowly upward. Toward the summit is a sheer ascent of 1,000 feet, where a slip would certainly be fatal." (Frank La Roche, En Route to the Klondike, 1898) Klondike Gold Rush.
