Summary

edit
Description Knapsack Viaduct - Lapstone, New South Wales. Built in 1863-64 by John Whitton, Engineer–in–Chief of New South Wales Government Railways, who was also responsible for the Victoria Bridge over the Nepean River. Whitton was known as the Father of New South Wales Railways. The sandstone viaduct originally carried the western railway line across Knapsack Gully. When the railway was diverted through Glenbrook tunnel in 1912 the viaduct was converted to a roadway for the Great Western Highway. In 1993 the M4 Motorway was extended to Lapstone, bypassing the viaduct, and the old highway was converted for use as a walking trail.
