Description
English: These are the remains of Koile Road (5th cent. B.C.) which connected Athens to Piraeus and its harbors through the Long Walls. When the urban Deme (district) of Koile, was gradually abandoned after the construction of the new fortification wall (the Diateichisma or Cross-Wall in the 4th cent. B.C.), the road fell in disuse and the whole area of the district was covered with grave monuments taking the form of a cemetery. Remains of this cemetery are visible in the lower-right corner of the image. The fallen cylinder is a grave marker.
