DescriptionKosice meteorite.jpg | On the night of February 28, 2010, a brilliant fireball lit the skies over Central Europe. Fortunately, the event was witnessed by many people who had stayed up late to watch Olympic ice hockey. In additon to the bright flash of light, some residents in Eastern Slovakia reported low frequency blasting sounds not unlike canon fire. The illumination of the sky was filmed by several automatic fireball stations in the Czech Republic and Austria and two videos of the bolide shot in Hungary helped with the determination of the trajectory. A group of scientists and grad students combed the predicted fall location near the town of Kosice in Eastern Slovakia and on March 20th the first meteorite was discovered. Kosice is an H5 chondrite. This fusion crusted complete individual weighs 8.03 grams. | ||
