English: The Krull-Urban House, 522 East Utica Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. Erected in 1890, this delightful Queen Anne-style residence is most distinguished architecturally by the fine woodwork that adorns its exterior: the projecting secondary gable is undergirded not only by a dentil-crowned bay window but also a pair of prominent brackets whose unusual stepped design is echoed in the framing around the semicircular window within the gable itself, which also sports sunburst patterns above it on either side. The left-side gable is crossed horizontally by an unusually placed belt course with a row of modillions underneath. Closer to the ground, the front porch features a pediment over the entrance, handsome Doric columns serving as supports, and some nifty decorative spindles on the railings flanking the front steps. The original resident was Albert Krull (1860-1947), a butcher by trade whose stall was located at the Washington Market, but he only lived in the house for a year. The much-longer tenured second owner was Jacob Urban (1862-1936), a scion of the Urban family which was then a cornerstone of Buffalo's German-American community. By contrast with his brother George, a prominent businessman, landowner, and politico whose country house in Cheektowaga played host to the kickoff to Grover Cleveland's first presidential campaign, Jacob followed his father into the dairy business as owner of the Urban Dairy Company, a local bottler and vendor of milk and cream. He also served for a time as president of the local Milk Dealers' Union. Urban lived in the house until 1921.
