English: Clothing & acessories from the Norwegian Middle Ages, on display in the Medieval Exhibition (Middelalder-salen) at Museum of Cultural History (Kulturhistorisk Museum) in Oslo, Norway:
--- (LEFT SHOWCASE) 1. Leather mitten; 2. Hair- and dress-pins made from bone and antler; 3. Combs made from antler. The upper comb is from c. 1100, the one on the bottom right is from the 13th century. Two have a side with narrow teeth for removing lice.; 4. Shoes, all from medieval Oslo. Shoe fashions changed, although less rapidly than today. From the left: 11th century, c. 1200 and c. 1300. --- (RIGHT SCHOWCASE) 1-2. Ring brooches. Used to fasten clothing. Buttons first became common in fashionable dress in the 14th century. The brooch with an inscription i sfrom the 15th century.; 3. Knife, late 12th century. Knives were a standard article of dress in the Middle Ages.; 4. Brooch, c. 1100. bronze with Urnes-style decoration.; 5. Belt buckles, 13 th century. The enamelled buckle from Tønsberg was probably made in Limoges, France.; 6."Ice-foot", a primitive form of skate. The wearer pushed himself forward with a pole. The "skates" were fastened around the shoes with straps.; 7-8. Shoes for both adults and children. 13th century. |
