English: KUMUIA YAMA, RABAUL AREA, NEW BRITAIN. 1945-09-17. A CHINESE SENTRY STANDS GUARD WITH A PIECE OF RED AND WHITE PAINTED WOOD AT THE CHINESE INTERNMENT CAMP. HE IS ONE OF A COMPLETE UNIT BROUGHT FROM SINGAPORE BY THE JAPANESE TO WORK AS LABOURERS IN NEW BRITAIN. THEY WERE LIBERATED BY AUSTRALIAN FORCES WHO ENTERED THE AREA AFTER THE JAPANESE SURRENDER. |
