Marino Marini draws on the tradition of Etruscan and Northern European sculpture in developing the themes of the female nude, the bust and the equestrian figure. Interpreting classical themes in a modern spirit and with modern techniques, he tries to represent a mythical image but suitable for a contemporary context. The evolution of the horse and rider’s subject reflects Marini’s personal response to this changing context. The theme appears in his work for the first time in 1936: the proportions of horse rider are relatively slender and the two figures are balanced, formal and calm. From the following year the horse is represented as he is shaking and the rider as he gestures. In 1940 the shapes became simpler and archaic and the proportions more stocky. Since the late 1940s the horse is planted motionless on the ground, the neck elongated, stretched, ears lowered back and the mouth open, as in this example, which conveys the characteristic aspects of Marini’s work of this period: affirmation and emphasis of strength, explicitly associated with sexual potency.
