The visit of her majesty Queen Victoria to the Arctic ship Resolute - December 16th, 1856, to whom this engraving is by special permission respectfully dedicated by her obedient servants, P. & D. Colnaghi & Co. / painted by W. Simpson ; engraved by G. ZobeL, 1859. Resolute became trapped in the Arctic, and an American whaler helped to remove the ship. As a gesture, Queen Victoria made a desk from the wood and presented it to the President of the United States. (2015/10/16). |
