English: LMS Ivatt Class 2F (BR Class 2MT) 2-6-0 No.46521 in BR lined Brunswick Green livery and 1949 totem at Toddington, G-WR, 4 June 2022.
Although an LMS design, No.46521 was built by BR (WR) at Swindon in 1953 and so never had a LMS number nor LMS livery. In fact it and was amongst 25 2MT's which were based on the Western Region when new as the WR had many old Dean Goods 0-6-0's which needed replacing. However, initially, the 2MT's did not prove as capable as the Dean Goods, old though they were, until experiments at Swindon resulted in a programme of completely redraughting their front end, which markedly improved their performance. The Ivatt LMS/LMR 2F/2MT 2-6-0's (with the Ivatt 2P/2MT 2-6-2T's, 4F/4MT 2-6-0's and Fairburn 4P/4MT 2-6-4T's) effectively formed an interim BR standard design whilst the new standards were designed and built. The subsequent BR Standard Class 2MT 2-6-0's were almost identical to their LMS predecessors. No.46521 was withdrawn in 1966. |
