LTC Loyd completes 40 years of military service

English: LTC Dayton Loyd served as a senior member of the Military Intelligence community and retired from the military after 40 years of service. His career is marked with many historic achievements that spanned around the world; however, he is most proud that he served and completed three distinctly different career paths. LTC Loyd started his career as a young private promoting through the NCO ranks. Then, he accepted a career as a Warrant Officer, progressed through the Chief Warrant Officer ranks, and then, at a time when he was eligible for retirement, he accepted a direct commission as a 2LT. Ultimately, he progressed through the officer ranks and obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC).

LTC Loyd had an impressive military career with many highlights. He returned from a tour in Africa, where he served as the Combined Joint Deputy Director of Intelligence. While in Africa, LTC Loyd was responsible for all the Military Intelligence service members from each of the military services, (both US and foreign), the Intelligence professionals who worked there, and the activities of several intelligence agencies covering the security and collection needs of 58 countries. Earlier in his career, LTC Loyd was an Assistant Professor of Military Science and additionally held four commands. Two of his commands were as a Warrant Officer during the transition of a Field Artillery battery to becoming an Infantry company, (unheard of in the Warrant community). He also commanded a Recruit Sustainment Program and was the HHC RTI commander during its accreditation phase which achieved the honor of becoming an Army Center of Excellence (CoE). Lastly, LTC Loyd commanded the soldiers of a remote training unit and was a founding member of the PTAE, which trained more than three thousand Soldiers in preparation for combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. LTC Loyd served in many positions, to include being the Director of Intelligence and Security J2 ILJFHQ, ILNG Director Army Intelligence G2, Deputy Director of Intelligence for the NATO/G8 Summit 2012, Intel lead for the IL State Terrorism Center, Senior Intelligence Officer for two NATO missions in Europe, Director S2/S6 for Operation Noble Eagle, DLD Intelligence Chief, G2 for two BDEs, state HUMINT Officer, and lastly, the Intelligence Officer S2 for several BNs. LTC Loyd served on every continent around the world, minus Antarctica, and traveled through over a hundred countries. He conducted noteworthy service in South Korea, Japan, Honduras, Germany, Poland, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Jordan, Djibouti Africa, most of Europe, and the Middle East. He served in Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall, in Africa during the coups of Mali and Sudan, and in Afghanistan during the most aggressive phases of Operation Enduring Freedom. Like most career Soldiers, LTC Loyd is well decorated, to include the Bronze Star. However, he also received unparalleled recognition from some of our foreign partners. LTC Loyd was one of only a few Americans to ever receive the Korean White Horse ROK Ranger Tab while serving with the historic Republic of Korea 9th INF DIV, he received the Gold German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge, and he was one of only two Americans to receive several honors from the President of Afghanistan which were presented to him by the Minister of Defense in front of several thousand Afghan Soldiers. In 2021, LTC Loyd was one of only five individuals selected DoD-wide for the DoD Talent Management Shadowing Program. In this program, he spent an entire summer following and receiving mentorship from the most senior General Officers and SESs throughout the DoD at multiple defense locations, to include the Pentagon.

LTC Loyd has one master’s degree from the National Intelligence University in Strategic Intelligence, and a master’s degree in CIO/Cyber Intelligence completed through the National Defense University.
