Description |
English: This was taken from the driveway on the north front of the White House, looking out across the north lawn and the statue of Jefferson which used to be there, across Pennsylvania Avenue to Lafayette Park, where you see the statue of Jackson in the distance. See some of the photos here (whitehousemuseum.org) and here (Library of Congress), as well as File:1860s White House.jpg. The bronze statue was apparently placed in there in 1848, during Polk's administration; according to w:North Lawn (White House), the statue was removed in 1871, and placed in the Capitol (it is in the Rotunda today). There is a model for it in New York, per this page on the NYC government site; they say it was by Pierre-Jean David D'Angers. - (lightly edited from remarks by User:Clindberg, originally made at User talk:Jmabel/Stereo cards of Washington, D.C.. User:Jmabel adds that neither statue is really very legible in this stereo card. |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
