Il francese Jacques Callot (1592-1635) è la personalità di maggior rilievo tra gli incisori stranieri che operano in Italia nel XVII secolo. Originario di Nancy, il Callot giunge a Roma nel 1609 e nel 1612 è a Firenze dove, su incarico di Cosimo II, diventa il creatore di tutti gli apparati teatrali allestiti durante il suo regno. Sono proprio le scene teatrali, unitamente ai personaggi in maschera, i mendicanti e la vita campestre, i soggetti prediletti dall'incisore francese che, incisi con segno scattante, ma anche delicato ed attento ai più minuti dettagli, vivono immersi in un'atmosfera sospesa tra sogno e realtà. Della grande produzione del Callot ricordiamo "I Balli di Sfessania" 23 stampe del 1615-17; i "Capricci" del 1616-19; la "Fiera dell'Impruneta" del 1620, autentico capolavoro della grafica con 1500 figure incise(!); tra le opere di genere vedutista, i “Paesaggi italiani” (1618) e le "Vedute di Parigi" databili tra il 1629 e 1630.
