Description
English: The historic Old City Hall located at the Northeast corner of Elm Street and Washington Avenue in downtown La Grande, Oregon. This building is located within the La Grande Commercial Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places. The first two bays of the brick building were built in 1899 for the city's fire department with plans drawn by W.J. Bennett. At this time it was only one floor in height. The building was expanded in the 1900's to add several city offices and the police department. The second floor was added in 1912 to house firemen quarters and city chambers. The concrete bell tower was added in 1924. The police department moved out of the building to better facilities in 1980 followed by city offices in 1983. The fire department moved out in 2002. The building now houses the Eastern Oregon Fire Museum and Learning Center.
