| Description |
November 1995 saw me visit the island Sicily to successfully travel over the entire state run railway system. However I left out the only remaining privately owned one, the Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCEE). The 106km long 950mm narrow gauge route loops from Riposto on the coast, around via the back of the famous active volcano Mount Etna and back towards the coast terminating in Catania, the second largest city in Sicily. Mount Etna can be in the background. To 'connect' up with the narrow gauge at the Riposto end requires a short 2 to 3 minute walk from the Trenitalia station Giarre-Riposto to the FCE station Giarre. Riposto is one stop further on and has a small servicing depot for both trains and buses. Seen on arrival at Riposto on the morning of 16 October 2017 is railcar RALn64.05 built originally in 1949 and refurbished in the early 1980s. The train - no.5, 06:32 Randazzo to Riposto is strengthened up with a trailer to cater for large numbers of school and college students. |
