Le belvédère de la Villa Méditerranée avec vue sur le port de la Joliette Ce centre culturel consacré à la Méditerranée, comme on s'en doute, a été voulu par Michel Vauzelle, le Président de la Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur qui a financé seule le projet. L'architecte italien : Stefano Boeri a conçu un édifice hors normes qui développe ses espaces sur et sous la mer et se distingue par une spectaculaire avancée en porte-à-faux de 40 mètres, au-dessus d’un bassin artificiel de 2 000 m2. Véritable prouesse technique, il est, à ce jour, unique en Europe par sa capacité d’accueil du public. Le niveau supérieur, dont le toit culmine à 19 mètres au-dessus du bassin, accueille un plateau d’exposition de 760 m2, relié par une passerelle à une salle de 150 m2 et entouré d’un belvédère en libre-accès. Le problème actuel de cet édifice ce sont les infiltrations, en effet le bassin d'eau de mer situé au-dessus de l'amphithéâtre a du être vidé car il fuit à l'intérieur du sous-sol, des travaux d'étanchéité sont en cours ! Il faut donc prendre au mot l'architecte quand il écrit :-)) : La première intention était de faire pénétrer un morceau de mer à l’intérieur du bâtiment...
