Le concours entre Apollon et Marsyas, sur le plafond peint de la chambre d'Apollon

La chambre d'Apollon fut décorée entre 1537 et 1540 par des artistes de style maniériste, Giovanni da Udine, spécialiste du style grotesque, et Francesco Salviati. Les loges vaticanes décorées par Raphaël ont été une source d'inspiration pour ces artistes.

Le thème des peintures est le concours musical entre le dieu Apollon jouant de la lyre et le satyre Marsyas jouant de l'aulos ainsi que le supplice du satyre décidé par Apollon pour avoir osé le défier. Au centre du plafond se trouve un médaillon avec le char d'Apollon tiré par quatre chevaux.

Les figures révèlent quelques particularités rappelant l’art de Michel-Ange, que F. Salviati connaissait bien.
