Description

La façade de la cathédrale avec son portique et ses deux tours de style arabo-normand Le portique a été remanié au 18ème siècle, la tour de gauche n'a jamais été achevée, elle a été transformée en clocher au 18ème siècle.

La cathédrale de Monreale, l'abbaye bénédictine (au sud) et le palais royal (au nord) ont été construits à partir de 1172 sous le règne de Guillaume II, petit-fils de Roger II.

La cathédrale présente un mélange de styles parmi lesquels le style normand est prépondérant (tours massives à l'entrée, haute abside, plan basilical,..) ainsi que le style arabe pour les ornementations, notamment du chevet ou de la façade.

Sous le portique, le portail d'entrée en bronze a été réalisé en 1185 par Bonanno Pisano (l'architecte de la Tour de Pise).
