Description

Le dôme d'une des deux mosquées latérales en restauration.

Tamerlan a décidé en 1399 de construire une mosquée en l'honneur (selon certains historiens) de Masjid-i-Jami, aujourd'hui nommée "Bibi Khanum", le nom de la fille de l'Empereur de Chine et sa femme préférée.

Le bâtiment était grandiose et très élevé pour l'époque. Chaque minaret était haut de 50 m, le portail de la salle de prière culminait à 40 m.

Au centre de la cour se trouvait un lutrin de marbre destiné au Coran d'Osman (Othman) datant du VIIè siècle et rapporté de Damas par Tamerlan. Ce Coran est aujourd'hui à Tachkent.

Le lutrin existe toujours et fait l'objet d'un pèlerinage car la croyance populaire est qu'une femme désirant des enfants doit ramper sous le lutrin à jeun le matin.

La construction semble avoir été trop rapide car Tamerlan était pressé et le bâtiment se serait dégradé très rapidement.

Sa restauration a été commencée par les Soviétiques en 1974, elle devra se poursuivre encore plusieurs années.
