La ville ancienne de Jaipur est entourée d'un rempart crénelé, elle comporte des rues qui se coupent à angle droit, avec des quartiers dévolus aux différents métiers, ce qui est relativement inhabituel en Inde.

En 1876, la cité a été peinte en rose, la couleur de l'hospitalité, pour recevoir le futur Edouard VII.
