Description
English: The Lackawanna branch of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library is located at 560 Ridge Road, at the west end of the city's central business district. Certainly one of the most interesting libraries in the Buffalo & Erie Country Public Library system from a historical standpoint, the Lackawanna library exists largely thanks to Clara Whealen, a citizen whose constant appeals to the local press and influential civic interests were the factor that spurred wealthy steel magnate Andrew Carnegie - whose U.S. Steel trust, ironically, was the bitter corporate rival of Lackawanna Steel - to locate one of his famed "Carnegie libraries" - indeed, one of the last ever to be established - in town. Constructed in 1922 on what was once the site of a potter's field, the Lackawanna Public Library was designed by the local firm of Bley & Lyman as a handsome example of the Colonial Revival style, with tall arched windows and a front entrance of Classical inspiration consisting of a pair of double doors crowned by a handsome fanlight and framed by a pair of Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment. At the outset, the basement of the library contained a children's reading room featuring displays of Colonial American artifacts. From 1984 until its move to a purpose-built space in 2013, the basement was later home to a museum chronicling the history of the aforementioned Lackawanna Steel Company.
