Description
English: Stained glass depicting Lady Anne Verney (died 1558) (nee Danvers) at prayer with her 5 daughters. On her mantle she displays the arms of Danvers (ancient) (Argent, on a bend gules three martlets vert) quartering Pury (Argent, on a fess azure between three martlets sable three mullets of the field) (Source: MacNamara, F.N., Memorials of the Danvers Family, London, 1895, p.356[1]), birds here looking more like blackbirds (yellow legs) choughs (red legs) or crows (black legs). She was the daughter of Sir William Danvers of Calthorp, Oxfordshire, son and heir of John Danvers, Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas by his wife Anne Pury, daughter and heiress of John Pury (Purie) of Chamberhouse Manor, Thatcham, Berkshire.(The History of Banbury: Including Copious Historical and Antiquarian Notices ... By Alfred Beesley, p.189[2]). Formerly in the medieval chapel at Compton Verney House, Warwickshire, demolished in 1772 when the new house and chapel were built. Glass removed from new chapel c.1929 by 3rd Baron Manton and sold at Christie's. Market Hall Museum, Warwick.
