Description
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Laffey (DD-459) maneuvering alongside a heavy cruiser (either USS Pensacola (CA-24) or USS Salt Lake City (CA-25)), probably at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, with survivors of USS Wasp (CV-7) on board. Wasp had been sunk by a Japanese submarine on 15 September 1942. The light cruiser in the center background is USS Juneau (CL-52). Note the aircraft catapult on the cruiser from which the photo was taken.
