Description
English: NASAs Aqua satellite flew over southern California on the afternoon of June 18, 2015 allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard to capture a true-color image of fires burning across the region.

The northernmost fire is the Lake Fire. It was reported just before 4:00 p.m. on June 17 and by July 8 had consumed just over 31,350 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest, according to Inciweb. It is 98% contained, with smoldering fire behavior in heavy fuels inside the perimeter, but well away from containment lines. The Forest Service lands in the area of the fire remain closed, including a number of day-use sites and campgrounds. Owners of cabins administered by the Forest Service are allowed to access them during the day, but are not permitted to stay overnight at this time, due to fire and smoke risk. At least 16 roads in the area remain closed due to direct impacts by the fire and fire suppression, while nine roads are closed due to flood risk below the burned area. Three hundred and fifty-five personnel continue to fight the fire and mop-up. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The red hotspot sitting closer to the Salton Sea marks the site of a vegetation fire in the town of Thermal, California. Named the Grapefruit fire due to the location on Grapefruit Boulevard, it was first reported on June 18 and consumed 60 acres before being contained on June 20.
