English: Vumi is a kind of drum used in Lamu to accompany dancing. A few of them are easily identified. The dance for which which the drum is being played often lends to its name. this drum can be as short as eight inches or as tall as three feet and will vary in width accordingly. Vumi are sometime tuned by placing a burning piece of paper or wood under the drum there by heating the head. as the head is warmed it expands and the pitch of the drum decreased giving it a deeper tone.
