Description

Portland, Oregon, is my final major stop of the July 2012 road trip, and I begin my Portland tour with a visit to Lan Su Chinese Garden. The garden is modeled after the famed scholars' gardens in the Chinese city of Suzhou, which also happens to be Portland's sister city.

The name Lan Su is short for "Portland-Suzhou"; the character Lan (蘭) is the last character of the Chinese transliteration of Portland (波特蘭), while the character Su (蘇) is the first character of Suzhou (蘇州). The resulting name, "Lansuyuan (蘭蘇園)," can also mean "Garden of Awakening Orchids" if the chosen characters' literal meanings are used.

Opened in 2000, this is considered the most authentic Chinese garden outside China. It took on its current name in 2010.
