| Description |
A landing craft, infantry (LCI), no. 578, following one of the first waves of US Army troops on Morotai Island in the Moluccas. Being unable to get close into shore the troops had to land in comparatively deep water. The battle of Morotai was part of the Western New Guinea campaign and took place between 15 September – 4 October and opposed in the early days of the operation 57,020 U.S. army troops against 500 Japanese infantry units, which would later be reinforced. The battle ended with the surrender of the Japanese commanders.
