The two pots from the heated frame (20C theoretically, but in this last cold snap - anyboy's guess) in the greenhouse. (There's another pair out on the bench, kept just frost free.) The one on the left is in peat-based compost, that on the right is peat-free (seeds sown mixed with sand equally between the four grit-topped pots without looking at the labels so no favouritism.) I split the batch between the two temperature regimes because in heat I would expect the seed to germinate quicker (and lapageria seed are best as fresh as possible) but germinating in the middle of winter might stress the seedlings (low light levels, botrytis etc). On the other hand, keeping them cool all winter to come up (hopefully) in spring might either mean the seed dies over winter or that the seedlings have a better start, coming up in brighter, airier conditions, as they presumably do at home in Chile. |
