Summary edit
DescriptionLarge Scale Strip Mining (46125842205).jpg |
Mining occurs on a massive scale in northern Chile. Here dust can be seen rising from massive dump trucks transporting mineral rich material and from extraction operations. Surface mining generally involves removing vegetation, top soil and rock (known as overburden materials) above the mineral deposit. Due to the lack of vegetation and soil, only rock and gravel would have needed to be removed from the surface before reaching the mineral deposit. This would be considered an open-pit mine using a strip mining method. Waste from the mining operation is transported to a disposal site, and the ore is transported to a downstream processing site.
