Description |
English: On April 21, 1922, one of the largest disasters in Juneau mining history began to unfold - the collapse of one of the mines at Treadwell. Combest documented through his photographs that a flood would be the virtual end of most of the Treadwell mines. By the morning of the 22nd, the Treadwell, 700-Foot and Mexican mines had flooded completely. Although a handful of horses and mules were lost in the cave-in, no miners died, in part thanks to a shift change just before the flood. PH Coll 334.Combest1 Active in Juneau, Alaska, 1917.
