Le cycle de la "Grande Vallée" est une suite de 21 peintures que Joan Mitchell a réalisées, entre 1983 et 1984, en pensant à un lieu, décrit par Gisèle Barreau, une de ses amies qui s’en servait de refuge durant son enfance. L’ensemble ne fut exposé qu’une seule fois, en 1995-1996, à la galerie de Jean Fournier, son fidèle marchand parisien depuis 1967. N’ayant jamais vu ce lieu, c’est donc plutôt d’un imaginaire des éléments, au sens bachelardien, que s’est inspirée Mitchell. La Fondation Louis Vuitton a exposé 10 oeuvres de ce cycle en les regroupant dans la plus haute salle du batiment appelée la "Cathédrale" et qui clôture l'exposition "Monet-Mitchell". Pour le dernier Monet, celui des Nymphéas, il s’agit de la restitution de motifs longuement observés devant les nymphéas de Giverny ; pour Joan Mitchell, dans l’atelier de La Tour, à Vétheuil, elle explore la transposition, à travers le filtre de la mémoire, de « feelings » – ces perceptions restées vives par-delà l’espace et le temps."
