Le Bouddha dans la salle de prière de la pagode khmère Xà Tón (Xvayton)

En khmer, "xvay" signifie un singe et "ton" signifie se balancer de branche en branche.

Cette pagode khmère, célèbre pour ses stupas à quatre visages (comme au Bayon) est située dans la commune de Tri Tôn, province d'An Giang.

Selon les moines, la première pagode a été construite en 1696 dans cette région sauvage où vivaient de nombreux singes, elle a été reconstruite à la fin du XIXème siècle (1896) et renforcée en 1933.

Son architecture est caractéristique de l'art khmer. La salle de prière (sur la photo) est entourée de plusieurs anciens stupas et de bâtiments pour l'habitation des moines, pour les enseignements, pour la bibliothèque, etc..

La pagode est également devenu un centre culturel de conservation des traditions khmères. Elle conserve de nombreux livres de prière bouddhistes écrits sur des feuilles de palmiers.
