Description
English: Leaf litter Smooth grey bark and brightly-coloured, oval leaves identify the trees by the lane as beeches.
  • Beech trees have a typical lifespan of 150 to 200 years, sometimes reaching up to 300 years.
  • The dead leaves often remain on the tree until the spring. This process is called marcescence and it usually occurs when the trees are saplings but can continue to occur on the lower branches of more mature trees. These beeches grow by the footpath to the lakes near The Fording.
