One foggy morning, in the "bois de Verrière". Seeing that there was thick fog, I went up to take pictures of the woods (fog is great for that). The elements of the composition are the following: tree trunks form horizontal lines on top of which the branch and leaves contrast by their shape, diagonal direction and non-linearity of the leafs. The colors also contrast, of course, with the red of the leaves contrasting with the blue of the fog. In addition, the light at the center of the picture, with the gap in the trees and the lighter fog, contrasts with the darker, less saturated, and more crowded sides. The composition ideas to have in mind are that of contrast: the branch is interesting only because it creates a rupture with the monotony of the nearly-vertical trunks; the center appears as light only because the sides are dark. To create this photo, I found the branch with remaining leafs, of course. But I also choose a spot where there was a gap in the trees (due to a path) and used it to create the less crowded background for the trees. In terms of post-processing, I used the darktable software to enhace the effects that I was interested in. I made the sides darker and less contrasted. I made the branch more red. I made the fog light in the center. I enhanced the colors, blue and red. My tools where: split-toning for the color, a bit of contrast equalizer (in clarity preset) at the center to add contrast, a few tone curves to set the darkness of trees and background, a bloom filter to create more light, and color correction on the leaves, with a combination of manually-drawn mask and parametric mask (selecting on value) to select the leaves. |
