Description

least snapdragon, Antirrhinum kingii, Nevada, Monitor Range, Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, Saulsbury Wash, Ralston Valley drainage, elevation 1805 m (5920 ft).

This humble snapdragon is endemic to cooler parts of the northern Mojave Desert and warmer parts of the southern Great Basin of western North America. You know it's been wet in the desert when this little guy shows up, like it did last year (and probably will again this year). Before this, I had not encountered the species since 1986, though it can be hard to spot in its habitat, and no doubt I just missed some of the good years in between.

In this species the little branch accompanying each flower will elongate into a fully flowering branch when moisture persists late enough in the season. In related vining species, this structure becomes a tendril that helps to support and secure the plant to the surrounding vegetation.
