Description

I've been thinking about simple Lego terrain for tabletop gaming, specifically Mobile Frame Zero.

I think a couple of goals need to be accomplished: it needs to be cheap to build, it needs to look decent, each tile of terrain should have enough room for a small mech to stand on, and it needs to be easy to transport.

The cross shaped tiles shown above can be built from the simplest of parts. Either four 2x4 plates and two 4x8 plates or twelve 2x4 plates for one terrain tile -- 2x4 plates are dirt cheap on bricklink. Currently you would have to spend around 12 Euro cents for a terrain tile... the above scene uses 13 tiles. Let's say 200 tiles make a decent battle area. 24 Euros. Works out nicely I think.

I have not fixed the terrain tiles into place here. One would probably want to add 2x2 plates (also dirt cheap) to the bottom where the tiles meet, to prevent them from moving around.

Then you just need some random bits and pieces to decorate the tiles. A couple of plants and some white bits for ruins and the skeleton of a fell beast seem to work nicely here. The rocks are more complex in my example here, but they too could be made from simple and inexpensive parts.

Transporting a huge number of these to where you want to play a game should be easy. As for looks, I'll let you decide.
