Description

Le goûter (french for "the snack") by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

Catalogue number: 1895/05

Dimensions: 115,5 x 70 cm

In 2010 the painting was owned by a private collector.

In the book refered to below, Bartoli and Frederick writes that the pot, the hands and the child's face are almost of equal importance in this picture. They think the childs face illustrates a combination of restfulness and readiness - although willingly modeling for the painting, she seems ready to at any moment jump and move about. Further they write that her face is "sweet, but not sugary, for the directness of her gaze invites conversation and inspires a sense of humor". They also applaud Bouguereaus execution of the background. They mean that, the usage of light backgrounds to enhance a 3-dimensional effect is unusual, but Bouguereau succeeded splendidly in this. At last, they write that this simple scene and girl, in Bouguereaus painting, "becomes a kinetic force, the very intelligence and spirit of this beautiful child".
