Description |
English: "Lenin monument from Eisleben" (in German: "Lenin-Denkmal aus Eisleben") by Russian socialist realism sculptor Matvey Manizer (Матвей Генрихович Манизер, 1891 – 1966), Leningrad 1925. Bronse sculpture of Soviet leader Lenin captured by the German Army during World War II, brought to Germany to be melted down, but installed in Eisleben, so that the Red Army found the monument undamaged on 3 July 1945. The inscription added later reads: This Lenin monument was stolen by the Hitler fascists from the Soviet Union. The Eisleben anti-fascists saved it from destruction. As a sign of appreciation for the liberation from the yoke of Hitler by hand of the glourious Red Army, it was installed in this place on the 2nd of july 1945 by the anti-fascist municipality. After World War II, Eisleben became part of the new state of Saxony-Anhalt (with Magdeburg as its capitol), part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) until Germany's reuinification in 1990. In 1991 the monument was taken down and transferred to the German Historical Museum in Berlin on permanent loan. The sculpture stands on permanent public display before the ticket counter in the foyer of the Deutsches Historisches Museum. |
